Techie Tuesday: Favorite WVR iPad Apps

Welcome to Techie Tuesday!

Last week's Techie Tuesday featured 4 fun and educational iPad apps for learning - at school or at home!

iPad App Speed Dating, which I first learned about from Jennie Magiera, is a fun way to share about several iPad apps in a short period of time.

In this round of iPad App Speed Dating, we spotlighted the following four iPad apps (led by Weaver Lake teachers):

Click on the images to learn more about how to use each of the apps.

Schoology

Instagram

Notability

Adobe Voice

Our iPad App Speed Dating featured stations for each of these apps.  Staff members spent five minutes at each app station, and rotated through to learn about each app.  Then, they had 10 minutes at the end to try out an app or ask follow-up questions.

Are you interested in trying out one (or more) of these apps in your classroom?  Let me know!

2nd Grade Ocean Animal Scratch Project

In 2nd grade, our students have been researching and becoming experts on an ocean animal.  To showcase and celebrate their learning, students will create a Scratch project to program their animal in its habitat to move around and share important facts with the world.

Here's an example to help get students started:

I laid out our Scratch workflow in 10 steps:

Looking forward to using these steps with students tomorrow!

Feel free to use / adapt these slides to fit a Scratch project you're working on with your students!

App Smashing for Learning

For our Feb. 2nd staff development, I co-facilitated a session on app smashing with my colleague, +Thomas W Brandt . Here are the presentation and resources we shared that day - please feel free to contact us with any questions or for more information about app smashing for learning!

Interested in increasing engagement, choice, and creativity for your learners?  App smashing provides a fun, dynamic way for teachers to create and share information and for students to show what they know by merging content from various apps to create a final product.  In this hands-on session, we’ll discuss the what, why, and how of app smashing. Participants will explore app smashing and the ways it can be integrated into any content area.  Please bring your own device to try out app smashing, and to access resources referenced in the session.  Let the app smashing begin!

Coding in the Elementary Classroom

For our Feb. 2nd staff development, I facilitated a session on coding in the elementary classroom. Here are the presentation and resources I shared that day - please feel free to contact me with any questions or for more information about coding in the K-5 classroom!

Explore the many ways that coding can put the power of creation into your students’ hands by harnessing their natural curiosity to understand how things work. We will discuss ways to begin coding in the classroom, and explore the skills students actively develop through coding. Join the coding revolution and help our students make the shift from technology consumers to technology creators!

Our New Robots Are Here!

We are very excited to get started with our new Project Lead The Way robotics curriculum, and have already started introducing concepts and lessons with kindergarteners, and soon with 5th grade as well!

Robotics provides awesome, hands-on opportunities for students to employ engineering and technological concepts in fun and engaging ways.  It is a natural extension of what our students are learning with coding, and is also a way to make the results of coding come alive in tangible ways.
